Over the past fifteen years, NNCC has supported more than 45 AmeriCorps VISTAs in a variety of projects and settings. NNCC VISTAs have created sustainable projects including a community-based health center serving low-income residents in Eastern North Philadelphia, a childhood lead poisoning prevention curriculum, improving academic achievement and skills in STEM for African-American youth in out-of-school time programs, expanding the proportion of housing authority residents that are able to access affordable health insurance and wellness services, and building the capacity of a statewide consortium to integrate financial and economic counseling with education about and enrollment in affordable health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs. AmeriCorps VISTA members live and serve in some of our nation’s poorest urban and rural areas. With passion, commitment, and hard work, they create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
