Programs & Services - Be Free From Nicotine®

Be Free From Nicotine is a 7-week quit smoking program that uses the Freedom From Smoking curriculum developed by the American Lung Association. Our program provides participants with the tools, skills and support that are so important to successfully quit smoking.

In the fall of 2002, the National Nursing Centers Consortium was awarded a three-year grant from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to provide quit smoking classes in several of its member nurse-managed health centers located in Philadelphia, PA. This program targets predominantly uninsured, low-income minority smokers living in poor communities that are disproportionately affected by the burden of tobacco use and tobacco-related health problems. FREEDOM FROM SMOKING® Program Overview

Program Overview

Orientation Session: Participants will get to know each other, learn about the program, how it works, and what to expect in the weeks ahead.

Session 1: The purpose of this session is to build motivation to stop smoking. Participants will begin to increase their awareness and understanding of their personal smoking habits on the physical, emotional, and mental levels. We will explore individual smoking rituals and what role smoking plays in daily life.

Session 2: Participants will make specific plans to cope with their smoking triggers in order to avoid relapse. In addition to developing a plan of action, participants will be encouraged to establish a “buddy system”. Participants will also receive some information on nicotine replacement therapy and will begin making general preparations for quitting.

Session 3: Quit Day. Participants will make a firm decision to go smoke-free from this day forward. We will revisit fears about quitting and develop individualized plans to help each of the participants create success for themselves.

Session 4: We will explore the group’s use of short-term coping strategies. We will discuss the withdrawal process, examine the difference between a slip and a relapse and highlight the medical and non-medical benefits of quitting. Participants will also spend time discussing successes, challenges, and fears they’ve experienced over the past 48 hours.

Session 5: We will examine long- term strategies for maintaining a smoke-free lifestyle. We will deal specifically with fitness and exercise, and saying, "No" to cigarettes in social situations.

Session 6: This is truly a time for celebration! We will cover how long the recovery process takes, what participants can continue to expect, how to stay connected to the available support systems, and then we ask participants to evaluate the program.
